  Q: How to replace the front and rear seals in an engine?

  A: To replace the front seal, remove the vibration damper and carefully pry the seal out of the cover. The boring operation is followed by placing a new seal with its open end pointing inwards. A socket and hammer should be used to drive the seal into the bore. When removing Timing Cover, drive seal out of cover from rear side. The process is repeated for each bore before inserting a new seal in it with open end facing inwards. A socket and hammer are used to install the seal into the bore. For 1990 and earlier 7.4-liter V8 engines, remove Oil Pan and Oil Pump for rear seal replacement. Remove rear main bearing cap and push the cap section of its upper part to remove the seal area.
