The Chevrolet Express Throttle Body controls the flow of air into the engine, providing the van with smooth power and reliable fuel metering. Mounted between the air cleaner and intake manifold, this is the Throttle Body. It contains a butterfly valve that opens wider as the accelerator is applied and also contains sensors that inform the PCM of the need for additional fuel to maintain a balanced air-fuel mixture. Early Chevrolet vans applied Throttle Body Injection, a compact unit that combined one or two injectors and a pressure regulator above the throttle plate to allow designers to retain carburetor-style manifolds but receive quicker starts, better mileage, and lower emissions. Later Express models adopted multi-port injection, so the Throttle Body was an air-only gate with passages for an idle air control valve and a throttle position sensor that report plate angle and control idle speed. Mechanical cable linkage formerly rotated the plate directly, but drive-by-wire (electronic throttle control) replaces cables with pedal position sensors and an electric motor on the Throttle Body, which reduces sticking problems and enables traction systems to fine-tune power for recent Express versions. Although generally durable, in typical Chevrolet fashion, there is the possibility that wear on the shaft or carbon buildup inside the housing will cause rough idling, and cleaning or part replacement may be needed.
