Set the parking brake and block the rear wheels, then place the transaxle in Park. If necessary for access, work in the engine compartment to remove the turbocharger air inlet duct or battery. Pry the shift cable end from the ball of the transaxle shift lever arm, removing the cable from the cable end by squeezing the locking tabs together. Pinch the locking tabs and detach the cable from the shift cable bracket. To access the shift cable at the shift lever assembly, remove the center console. Press the cable housing tabs in to disengage the cable from the shift lever assembly bracket, then remove the retainer (if equipped) and pry the shift cable from the shift lever pin. Pull back the carpet on the driver's side at the firewall to expose where the cable goes through the floor pan; for 2015 and earlier models (and 2015 Malibu Limited), pull or push the shift cable grommet into the passenger compartment, while for 2016 and later models (except Malibu Limited), remove the nuts and pull the grommet off the studs. Remove the shift cable by pulling it out through the passenger compartment, and installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the rubber grommet is properly installed to prevent leaks before adjusting the cable. Set the parking brake and block the wheels again, placing the shift lever in Park and ensuring the transaxle shift lever is also in the Park position. Release the adjustment lock on the cable housing by pulling back on the retainer, prying up on the cable lock, and pulling the cable out of the cable end. Recheck the Park position of both shift levers, allowing the shift cable to automatically adjust. Press down on the adjustment lock until it is flush with the cable housing, then check the shift lever for correct operation in all ranges, repeating the adjustment if any problems arise.
