Remove the shift lever knob, and for 4-speed models, the spring and T-handle. Raise the vehicle for access beneath, then disconnect the speedometer cable and TCS switch on the transmission. Remove the drive shaft and support the engine/transmission by placing a jack and block of wood as an insulator under the oil pan. Remove the transmission mount to crossmember bolts and crossmember to frame attaching bolts, support the engine, and remove the crossmember. Disconnect the shift rods from the transmission, and for floor shift models, disconnect the backdrive rod at the bellcrank. For floor shift models, remove the bolts attaching the shift control assembly to the support, then carefully pull the unit down until the shift lever clears the rubber boot and remove the assembly from the vehicle. Remove the upper bolts from the transmission to clutch housing, install guide pins in the holes, and then remove the lower bolts. On some later models, it may be necessary to remove the catalytic converter to permit removal of the transmission. Lower the supporting jack until the transmission can be withdrawn rearwards and removed. When installing, raise the transmission into position and slide it forwards, guiding the clutch gear into the clutch housing. Install the transmission clutch housing retaining bolts and lock washers, and torque-tighten to the specified value. Slide the shift lever into the rubber boot and position the shaft control to the support, then install and torque-tighten the retaining bolts. Connect the shift rods to the transmission and torque-tighten the bolts, then connect the backdrive rod to the bell crank. Raise the engine and position the crossmember, then install and torque-tighten the transmission mount and crossmember retaining bolts. Install the drive shaft, connect the speedometer cable and TCS switch wiring, then install the T-handle and spring for 4-speed models, and the shift knob on floor shift models. Fill the transmission with the correct quantity and grade of lubricant, then lower the vehicle to the ground.
