If the engine has been removed, consider the following steps inapplicable; To start with, both the torsional damper and crankcase cover should be taken off while for the Oldsmobile engines, the fuel pump eccentric that is at the end of the
Camshaft should be also be taken out. Bring the engine to the position having the reference marks on the
Crankshaft and camshaft sprocket facing down and do not take off, the sprocket or the chain until the marks are set. Subsequently, undo the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts and raise upward the camshaft sprocket and timing chain from the front of the engine slightly if possible with the aid of a 'soft' mallet. In the case that the crankcase sprocket is to be removed, it is possible to take it off the crankshaft with a puller. In order to set the crankshaft sprocket, the motorist has to put a bolt and washer from the puller set. Put the timing chain onto the camshaft sprocket, so that portion that is loose will hang down over the crankshaft sprocket. Thanks to the timing marks being in the correct position, slide the chain over the crankshaft sprocket and pull the camshaft sprocket up with the retaining bolts, without hammering of any kind as this will push the welsh plug located at the rear of the engine. When bringing the timing marks on the two sprockets into perfect alignment, apply engine oil on the chain then proceed to put back the other parts in the reverse manner to the removal process.
