Oldsmobile Rack And Pinion Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install a rack and pinion on Oldsmobile Cutlass?
A: First untwist the battery ground cable and in case it is available, the coupling shield also must be untwist. Third, remove the nuts, lock washers and bolts used in joining the coupling flange to the steering shaft. Next, take out the lock nut and washer of Pitman arm and noting the position of the arm with respect to the shaft and then use a puller to releases it. Then pull the Rack And Pinion from the frame, unscrewing it from the car bottom side, if necessary. While fitting the new gear ensure that it is fitted in the right way so that the coupling can be fitted into the flanged end of the steering shaft. Bolt the part of gear to the frame of the vehicle, place the washers and bolts in their respective positions and then tighten them up to the recommended torque. Screw the steering coupling over the flanged end of the column with lock washers and nuts and torque the nuts. Last but not the least restore the Pitman arm back to its position and reconnect the battery ground wire along with the coupling shield if it was disconnected.
