Saturn Ion Fuel Rail supplies pressurized gasoline to the engine's fuel injectors to allow the compact car to mix fuel and air with precision and run smoothly. Early models combined the Fuel Rail with throttle body injection, which was mounted above the throttle plates and contained one or two solenoid-controlled injectors within a single unit, providing a fairly simple bridge from outgoing carburetors to newer tech. As Saturn rejuvenated the platform, the Ion incorporated multiport injection, in which a skinny metal Fuel Rail runs across the intake manifold runners, feeding individual port injectors that open for shorter pulses at idle and longer pulses under load, allowing the powertrain control module to fine-tune mixture for fuel economy and low emissions. Recent versions are based on a high-pressure common Fuel Rail applied in gasoline direct injection, which pumps the fuel at extreme pressures directly into the combustion chambers to produce a finer spray and more complete combustion. Each style has the same objective; however, TBI has lower pressure and central placement, port injection has moderate pressure with runner mounted nozzles, and direct injection requires the greatly stout Fuel Rail to cope with thousands of psi. Across the production years, Saturn ensured that every Ion received the corresponding hardware to ensure the Fuel Rail could consistently support quick starts, steady power and reduced exhaust pollutants.
