The Saturn LS Engine Mount secures the engine in position and eliminates vibrations and noise. It provides the driver with a quieter cabin and better control. The Engine Mount bolts a metal bracket to the motor and bolts another to the chassis with a thick rubber insulator between them. It absorbs regular vibration but stops any side-to-side or fore-aft drift that could damage parts. In the beginning, Saturn LS automobiles utilized this traditional rubber type of design. However, later variations utilized hydraulic designs, injecting fluid into the rubber core to absorb smaller vibrations without letting the engine wander. Certain premium variants even adopted electronically regulated active units. This design allowed the Engine Mount to feel soft at idle for comfort. - Q: How to check and replace engine mounts in four cylinder engine on Saturn LS?A:Engine mounts seldom require attention, but broken or deteriorated mounts should be replaced immediately or the added strain placed on the driveline components may cause damage or wear. During the check, the engine must be raised slightly to remove the weight from the mounts. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then position a jack under the engine Oil Pan. Place a large block of wood between the jack head and the oil pan, then carefully raise the engine just enough to take the weight off the mounts. Check the mounts to see if the rubber is cracked, hardened or separated from the bushing in the center of the mount. Check for relative movement between the mount and the engine or frame (use a large screwdriver or prybar to attempt to move the mounts). If movement is noted, lower the engine and tighten the mount fasteners. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Place a large block of wood between the jack head and the oil pan, then carefully raise the engine just enough to take the weight off the mounts. Do not disconnect more than one mount at a time unless the engine will be removed from the vehicle. Remove the engine mount through-boll/nuts and detach the mount from the chassis bracket. The rear engine mount bracket can be accessed from below. Remove the nuts holding the mount to the engine bracket. Installation is the reverse of removal. Use thread-locking compound on the mount bolts and be sure to tighten them securely. Reconnect the battery.
