This procedure includes the removal of the balance shaft chain and balance shafts; the removal of the shafts is only effected if the engine has been extracted from the car. Any time there is a problem with the balance shafts that will require their pull, the engine has to come out anyway, since replacing the balance shaft bushings demands an automotive machine shop. But for those that are only pulling out or splicing the chain such information irrelevant to the activity at hand can be discarded. It is necessary to start by removing the negative terminal cable of the battery, then the engine oil dumping, and placement of the engine into the Top Dead Centre for number one cylinder. Following this, eliminate also the
Timing Chain, the timing chain guides and sprockets and eventually the balance shaft chain tensioner, and the adjustable balance shaft chain guide. Proceed by taking out the small and upper balance shaft chain guides, then the balance shaft drive chain being careful to gather slack in between the water pump sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket. If for some reason the balance shafts are being removed, then remove the balance shaft retainer bolts and then the shafts from the block of the engine. Wipe all components with the solvent and dry the components with compressed air, paying attention to the chain tensioners, balance shaft chain guides and the balance shaft chain and the crankshaft and water pump sprockets for wear or damage if so, change the parts. Therefore, before reinstalling the balance shaft chain, the crankshaft timing mark should be aligned at the bottom most position. Place the balance shafts in their bores and then tighten the retainer bolts to the required specifications. Once everything is prepared, before the balance shaft chain is put in place, align the sprockets to ensure that, with the help of a drill's bit, the intake side sprocket with the arrow pointing upwards is locked, while the exhaust side sprocket has the arrow pointing downwards. The balance shaft chain should be fitted with the Bright copper link positioned on the intake side of the crankshaft and the white or silver links on the exhaust side or crankshaft side of the balance shaft sprocket. Fit the balance shaft chain guides and tighten the bolts, reposition the balance shaft chain tensioner by turning the plunger by 90 degrees in order to compress the chain and lock it in position with the small stock of a drill. Correct the timing of the upper and lower sprockets, set the tension with the tensioner, tighten the upper bolts with a torque wrench and remove the drill bit to free the plunger, All the timing marks should be set correctly. Last but not the least it is necessary to replace the timing chain and all those components which are removed earlier, connect the battery terminals, fix the new oil filter, lubricate the crankcase with oil and start the engine for identification of leakage if any.
