- Q: How Does the Evaporative Emissions Control System, Canister Purge Valves and Vapor Canister Work and How Is It Diagnosed and Repaired on Saturn Vue?A:The Evaporative Emissions Control (EVAP) system is employed to block, contain, and recirculate fuel system evaporative emissions, the vapor from which contains unburned hydrocarbons. During warm weather, fuel vapors in the tank are directed to the fuel vapor vent valve and the fuel vapor control valve to the EVAP canister where they are stored for some time until the vehicle is run. When conditions are optimal, the PCM commands the CPP to open the canister purge valve, and the naturally occurring draw through the MAF, the vapors are drawn in the intake manifold and mixed with incoming air and burned in the combustion chambers. The EVAP canister is installed under the automobile near the fuel tank and stores activated charcoal for the vapor; it is a non-serviceable component.
