How do you remove the brake caliper for overhaul on Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the brake caliper for overhaul, start by removing the cover from the brake fluid reservoir and adjusting the fluid level if necessary. Then, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and remove the wheels. Next, bottom the piston in the caliper bore and clean the brake hose before removing it. Finally, remove the mounting bolts and detach the caliper from the vehicle. To overhaul the caliper, begin by removing the brake pads and cleaning the exterior of the caliper. Use compressed air to remove the piston from the caliper, being careful not to damage it. Remove the dust boot and piston seal, and discard any rubber parts. Clean all the parts and inspect the piston and caliper bore for any damage. Lubricate the piston bores and seal, then assemble the caliper with new bushings and sleeves. For installation, inspect the mounting bolts and push the piston back into its bore if necessary. Place the caliper over the rotor and mounting bracket, tighten the bolts, and check the clearance. Install the brake hose and inlet fitting bolt, and bleed the brakes if necessary. Finally, install the wheels and lower the vehicle, and depress the brake pedal to ensure proper contact between the pads and rotor.
