Q:
How to replace the lock cylinder and ignition switch in Cadillac DeVille and DTS? Posted by Customer
A:
In early models, the lock cylinder is situated on the upper right-hand side of the steering column, and to replace it, one must first disconnect the negative battery cable, disable the airbag system, and then proceed to remove the steering wheel and turn signal switch. The buzzer switch is extracted using needle-nose pliers, and the lock cylinder retaining screw is removed. The Ignition Lock Cylinder is subsequently pulled straight out of the column, and for models equipped with a PASS key security system, the PASS key wiring harness is also detached and carefully routed. Upon inserting the new ignition key into the Ignition Lock Cylinder, it is installed into the column, aligning the tab with the keyway, and secured with a retaining screw. If equipped with the PASS key system, the wire terminals are taped to a length of mechanics wire and pulled through the steering column, ensuring proper routing and connection. The remaining components are reinstalled as needed. Regarding the ignition switch, it is located on the lower portion of the steering column and is accessed by lowering the column after disabling the airbag system. The ignition switch, which is connected to the Ignition Lock Cylinder via an actuating rod, is removed by disconnecting the ignition switch harness connector and unscrewing the retaining screws. Upon ensuring the switch is in the Lock position, the electrical connector is attached to the new switch, the actuating rod is connected, and the switch is pressed into position, secured with screws, and its actuation is tested. For later models like DeVille and Seville, the Ignition Lock Cylinder/ignition switch replacement involves removing the steering column cover or necessary components for access to the release mechanisms, then manipulating the Ignition Lock Cylinder into the Start and Run positions to remove it. The new Ignition Lock Cylinder is installed by aligning it with the slot and locking tabs, ensuring the key is in place, and clicking it into position.
