Before the crankshaft is removed, the endplay should be checked. A dial indicator should be mounted with the stem in-line with the crankshaft and touching one of the crank throws. The crankshaft should be pushed all the way to the rear and the dial indicator zeroed. The crankshaft should then be pried to the front as far as possible and the reading on the dial indicator checked. The distance it moves is the endplay. If it's greater than specified, the crankshaft thrust surfaces should be checked for wear. If no wear is evident, new main bearings should correct the endplay. If a dial indicator isn't available, feeler gauges can be used. The crankshaft should be gently pried or pushed all the way to the front of the engine. Feeler gauges should be slipped between the crankshaft and the front face of the thrust main bearing to determine the clearance. The main bearing caps should be checked to see if they're marked to indicate their locations. They should be numbered consecutively from the front of the engine to the rear. If they aren't, they should be marked with number stamping dies or a center punch. Main bearing caps generally have a cast-in arrow, which points to the front of the engine. Each of the main bearing cap bolts should be loosened 1/4-turn at a time each, until they can be removed by hand. The caps should be gently tapped with a soft-face hammer, then separated from the engine block. If necessary, the bolts can be used as levers to remove the caps. The bearing inserts should not be dropped if they come out with the caps. The crankshaft should be carefully lifted out of the engine. It's a good idea to have an assistant available, since the crankshaft is quite heavy. With the bearing inserts in place in the engine block and main bearing caps, the caps should be returned to their respective locations on the engine block and the bolts tightened finger-tight.

Clean the main bearing surfaces of the block and caps meticulously, keeping them free of any debris.

If the seals have worn grooves in the crankshaft journals, or if the seal journals are nicked or scratched, the new seal(s) will leak.

Clean the crankshaft with solvent and dry it with compressed air, if available.

Avoid hammering the bearing into place or damaging the bearing faces, and do not use lubrication at this stage.

Scrape off any Plastigage residue and lift the crankshaft out of the cylinder block. Apply lubricant to the bearing surfaces and lay the crankshaft back in place. Apply lubricant to the bearing insert faces and clean the engine block and bearing cap mating surfaces. Apply clean engine oil to all bolt threads and tighten the main bearing cap bolts to the specified torque.

Loosen the main bearing cap bolts and remove the caps. Lift the crankshaft out of the engine, being careful due to its weight.
