There are two main types of cylinder heads used in automobiles today: the Overhead Valve (OHV) and the Overhead Camshaft (OHC). OHC can be further divided into Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) and Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC). Cylinder heads can be made from aluminum alloy or cast iron, and they contain valves, guides, seats, and valve springs. Proper maintenance and tuning of the engine are crucial to prevent wear on these components. When rebuilding a cylinder head, it's ideal to replace all valves, guides, seats, and springs, but depending on the engine's condition, some parts may be reused. The disassembly process involves using a valve spring compressor tool to remove the valves, locks, and springs. Inspection is done for wear and damage, and various specialized tools are used to measure valve clearances, valve guide diameter, and spring pressure. Refinishing and repairing the cylinder head components may require machine shop assistance. Valves may need to be refaced, guides replaced, and seats machined. After thorough cleaning and inspection, the assembly process involves lubricating and inserting valves into their original positions, installing springs, retainers, valve locks, and camshafts for the respective engine type.

Thoroughly clean the cylinder head and block mating surfaces by using a gasket scraper to remove carbon and old gasket material, followed by cleaning with lacquer thinner or acetone.

The valves can be removed by compressing the springs with a spring compressor, removing the keepers, and then carefully releasing the valve spring compressor.

Begin by lubricating and installing the first valve, applying moly-base grease or clean engine oil to the valve stem.

Inspect the cylinder head for cracks, coolant leakage, and warpage.

Store the heads on blocks of wood to protect the gasket sealing surfaces.

Thoroughly clean the cylinder heads and related valve train components, removing old gasket material and sealing compound from the head gasket, intake manifold, and exhaust manifold sealing surfaces. Remove built-up scale from the coolant passages and use a wire brush to clean the various holes and threaded holes. Clean the rocker arm pivot stud threads, cylinder head, rocker arms, pushrods, valve springs, shields, keepers, and retainers with solvent and dry them thoroughly. Scrape off heavy deposits from the valves and use a motorized wire brush to remove deposits from the valve heads and stems. Inspect the cylinder head for cracks, coolant leakage, and warpage. Check the valve seats, valve stem-to-guide clearance, valve faces, valve stem, margin width, valve spring wear, spring retainers and keepers, rocker arm faces, pivot contact areas, pushrod ends, rocker arm studs, and guide plates for wear, damage, and proper installation. Replace any damaged or excessively worn parts. If the valve components are in poor condition, reassemble them in the cylinder head. If they are in good condition, reassemble the valve train components in the cylinder head without major servicing.

Finally, apply moly-base grease to the rocker arm faces and pivot balls.

Some specialized tools are necessary for the disassembly and inspection procedures, and replacement parts may not be readily available.
