When performing service around Supple-mental inflatable Restraint (SIR) system components or wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Failure to do so could result in impossible airbag deployment, personal injury, or unneeded SIR system repairs. For removal and installation on Deville, Fleetwood, Eldorado and Seville, first disable the SIR system by disconnecting the negative battery cable, turning the ignition switch OFF, removing the SIR fuse, removing the left lower sound insulator and detaching the yellow 2-way connector at the base of the steering column. Then, remove the steering wheel and the turn signal switch, remove the key from the lock cylinder, remove the buzzer switch assembly, reinsert the key in the lock cylinder and turn the key to the LOCK position. Remove the lock retaining screw and the lock cylinder. For vehicles equipped with pass key lock cylinder, follow the specific steps for removal. To install, follow the specific steps for your vehicle model. After installation, enable the SIR system by connecting the yellow 2-way connector at the base of the steering column, installing the left lower sound insulator, installing the SIR fuse, connecting the negative battery cable, and turning the ignition switch to RUN. Verify that the "INFLATABLE RESTRAINT" indicator light flashes 7-9 times and then remains OFF. If the light does not function as specified, there is a fault in the SIR system.
