The AIR system is designed to reduce hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide levels in the exhaust by injecting air into the exhaust ports or catalytic converter. It uses an air pump, air management valve, and check valves to direct air to the correct location based on engine temperature and driving conditions. To diagnose any issues, check hoses, vacuum lines, and wires for damage and ensure the pump drivebelt is in good condition. The pump can be checked by feeling for pulsations and observing parallel air flow with increased engine speed. The check valve should only allow air flow in the direction of normal air flow. The air management valve can be checked for vacuum presence, and the deceleration valve can be checked for air flow and engine speed drop. To replace components, note the routing of hoses and tubes, and tighten all connections. The check valve can be replaced by disconnecting the outlet hose and removing the valve from the pipe assembly. The air management valve can be replaced by disconnecting the vacuum signal line, air hoses, and electrical connectors, and removing the mounting bolts. The air pump can be replaced by removing the air management valve and adapter, removing the drivebelt and mounting bolts, and then installing the new pump. The deceleration valve can be replaced by disconnecting the vacuum hoses, removing the retaining screws, and installing the new valve.
