Check the pivot seat in each rocker arm and the pivot ball faces for galling, stress cracks, and unusual wear patterns. Replace worn or damaged rocker arms with new ones and install new pivot balls. Ensure the hole at the pushrod end of each rocker arm is open. Inspect the pushrods for cracks and excessive wear at the ends. Roll each pushrod across a piece of plate glass to check for bending. Lubricate the lower end of each pushrod and install them in their original locations, making sure they seat completely in the lifter socket. Apply grease to the ends of the valve stems and the upper ends of the pushrods. Apply grease to the pivot balls to prevent damage and install the rocker arms, pivot balls, and nuts, tightening the nuts while ensuring the pushrods engage properly. Finally, install the rocker arm covers.

If the rocker arms are worn or damaged, replace them with new ones and use new pivot balls as well. Inspect the pushrods for cracks and excessive wear at the ends. Roll each pushrod across a piece of plate glass to check if it is bent. Lubricate the lower ends of the pushrods with clean engine oil or moly-base grease and install them in their original locations. Ensure that each pushrod is fully seated in the lifter socket. Apply moly-base grease to the ends of the valve stems and the upper ends of the pushrods before positioning the rocker arms and installing the nuts. Place the rocker arms in position, then install the pivot balls and nuts. Apply moly-base grease to the pivot balls to prevent damage to the mating surfaces before engine oil pressure builds up. Tighten the nuts.

Start removing the rocker arm stud nuts at the front of one cylinder head.

To inspect and remove rocker arms and pushrods, begin by detaching the valve cover from the cylinder head. When removing them, it's crucial to ensure that a specific cylinder is at Top Dead Center (TDC), and the lifters for that cylinder are on the base circle of the camshaft. Examine rocker arms for wear, cracks, and damage, especially where they contact pushrods and valve stems. Ensure that the pushrod-end hole in each rocker arm is open and inspect the rocker arm pivot area for wear, cracks, and galling. Replace worn or damaged rocker arms and use new pivot balls if needed. Lubricate pushrod lower ends with engine oil or moly-base grease, install them in their original locations, and ensure they seat properly in the lifter socket. Apply moly-base grease to valve stem ends and upper pushrod ends before positioning rocker arms and installing bolts. Place rocker arms, install pivot balls and bolts, and tighten rocker arm nuts, taking care to tighten them when there is no valve spring load on the rocker arm. On later models, align the tab on the roller rocker pivot with the slot in the cylinder head casting protrusion. After tightening the rocker arms, reinstall the valve cover, start the engine, and check for oil leaks or valvetrain noises.
