    Q:
How to service front wheel bearings on Chevrolet Caprice? Posted by Customer
    A:
Usually when brake pads are changed, servicing of front wheel bearings is necessary. It is also advisable to inspect these bearings any time the front wheels are lifted for one reason or another. The wheel can be checked for noise, rolling resistance, or excessive free play by spinning it while the vehicle rests firmly on jack stands. More than 0.005 inches of tire movement in and out means that it should be examined for bearing repacking or inspection as well as grease application or replacement. Removing the hub cap and wheel comes first before taking off the disc brake caliper by unscrewing the retaining bolts and sliding a piece of wood between brake pads to keep them apart. To release the hub grease cap, remove cotter pin, spindle nut together with washer, and push outwards the hub assembly after outer bearing has been removed. Afterwards, inner bearing lip seal is taken away following removal of inner bearing. Every part should be cleaned properly and examined for damages then refilled with high temperature front wheel bearing grease. Spread some grease on spindle and seating places for bearings; then install seals, bearings and hub assembly as well. Tighten spindle nut while spinning the hub for proper seating of bearings then replace its cotter pin afterwards. Put back dust cap adding brakes caliper parts then mount tire/wheel assembly lastly this time round it is done with lowering vehicle tightening wheel nuts before putting on hub cap.
