Q:
How to remove and install a brake booster? Posted by Customer
A:
Depress the brake pedal several times with the engine off and ensure no change in pedal reserve distance. Depress the pedal and start the engine, checking for a slight downward movement. Air tightness check: Start the engine and turn it off after one or two minutes. Slowly depress the brake pedal several times, noting if it goes down further the first time but gradually rises after subsequent depressions. Depress the brake pedal while the engine is running, then stop the engine with the pedal depressed and check for no change in pedal reserve travel after holding for 30 seconds. Removal and installation: Turn the ignition key to the OFF position and press the brake pedal multiple times to remove vacuum in the power brake booster. Set the parking brake and loosen the lug nuts on the left-front wheel. Raise the left-front part of the vehicle and support it securely on a jack stand. Remove the left-front wheel. Remove the top engine cover. Remove the air filter housing. Remove the ABS hydraulic control unit mounting bracket fasteners and carefully place the unit aside. Remove the master cylinder from the power booster. On V8 models and 2004-2008 V6 models, remove the exhaust crossover pipe from between the manifolds. On 2009 and later V6 engines, drain the cooling system and remove the heater pipes that run under the throttle body. Remove the check valve from the power brake booster and disconnect the electrical connector, if equipped. Remove the brake pedal position sensor. Remove the retaining clip securing the booster pushrod to the brake pedal arm. In the engine compartment, on V8 engine models, remove the mounting bolts for the coolant pipe brackets. Working inside the vehicle, remove the pushrod from the brake pedal arm. Turn the booster counterclockwise to release it from its mount. Carefully guide the booster unit out of the engine compartment. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the booster retaining tang engages its bracket completely and the tang at the base of the booster engages securely with the bracket on the firewall. Install a new retaining clip to secure the brake booster pushrod to the brake pedal arm. Tighten the master cylinder mounting fasteners. Test the operation of the brakes thoroughly before placing the vehicle into normal service.
