- Q:How to remove a crankshaft? Posted by Customer
- A:The crankshaft removal process begins by measuring the endplay using a dial indicator or feeler gauges. The main bearing caps are then removed, followed by the crankshaft itself. During installation, the engine block and crankshaft must be cleaned and inspected. The old main bearing caps and inserts are removed, and the new ones are installed in their place. The main bearing oil clearance is checked using Plastigage, and if necessary, different bearing inserts may be required. Once the clearance is correct, the Plastigage is removed, and the crankshaft is lifted out of the cylinder block. The bearing surfaces are lubricated, and the crankshaft is placed back into position. The main bearing caps are tightened in sequence, and the crankshaft endplay is checked again. Finally, the rear main oil seal is installed.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
