At specified intervals, the air filter and PCV filter (if equipped) should be replaced with new ones. Both filters should be inspected between changes. The MF/fuel injection system used on the V6 and 2.3 liter Quad-4 engines doesn't have an individual PCV filter. The engine air cleaner supplies filtered air to the PCV system. The air filter is located inside the air cleaner housing located at the front of the engine, near the battery. Remove the wing nut, lift off the cover and spark arrestor, then lift the filter out (On 2.8 liter V6 engines, remove the wing nut lift off the spark arrester and pull the air filter element out of the housing). For the 3.1 liter V6 engine and 1992 and later 2.2L four-cylinder engine, remove the bolts, lift the upper air cleaner housing off, then lift the filter element out. For the 2.3 liter four-cylinder (Quad-4) engine, the air cleaner housing is located on the left (driver's) side of the engine compartment. Remove the wing nut, lift the top cover off and withdraw the filter. For Throttle Body Injection (TBI) models, release the clips, lift the air cleaner housing cover up and pull the filter element out. For the 2.2 liter four-cylinder engine (1991 and earlier models), the air filter element is located on top of the throttle body. Unscrew the nuts or bolts from the top of the filter housing, lift off the cover and remove the filter element. While the filter housing cover is off, be careful not to drop anything down into the throttle body or air cleaner assembly. Wipe out the inside of the air cleaner housing with a clean rag. Except on TBI models with a PCV filter, place the new filter in the air cleaner housing. Make sure it seats properly in the bottom of the housing. Install the top plate or cover. The PCV filter is usually located in a holder in the side of the filter housing and can be removed after disconnecting the hose and removing a clip. Pull the PCV filter out of the holder. Install a new PCV filter in the holder and attach it to the air cleaner housing. Install the air filter.

The PCV filter is located on the housing's side.

When replacing the air filter, especially when the filter housing cover is off, be careful not to drop anything down into the throttle body or air cleaner assembly. It's essential to maintain a clean and debris-free environment during the replacement process.
