Oil leaks can occur at the extension housing oil seal and bushing or at the speedometer drive gear oil seal and O-ring; replacement is straightforward if the transmission does not need to be removed from the vehicle. The extension housing oil seal is located on the rear of the transmission where the driveshaft coupling affixes; if this is suspect the vehicle should be jacked and supported. Symptoms of leakage of a seal's are root on the fact that there could be transmission lubricant on the driveshaft and there might be dripping at the back of the transmitters. To solve this, it is necessary to unscrew the driveshaft, then, the dust shield must be tapped to the rear and having removed, it should not be distorted. The oil seal and bushing may be removed using a flat head pointed screwdriver and a flat bar whereas the removal of the stubborn one requires an oil seal removal tool; one has to ensure that the splines on the output shaft are not damaged during the process. Depending on the type and size of the pipe or socket it is possible to re-leave the new oil seal and drive it in squarely and fully home before installing a new bushing on the same method as described above. The dust shield should be reconneted gently, and the splines of output shaft and driveshaft sleeve yoke should be painted with the light weight grease before reinserting the shaft, but not harm the new seal lip. The speedometer cable and driven gear housing is located at the side of the extension housing; any sign of oil around the cable housing means a leakage in the seal and O-ring. The speedometer cable should have been disconnected while the seal was removed by a hook and a new seal inserted using a small socket in the manner of a drift. Last of all, a cord HTD 12/4 should be installed in the driven gear housing to conclude with the latter before fixing a cable assembly.
