To troubleshoot the ignition system on 1986 through 1989 Samurai and 1989 through 1991 Sidekick/Tracker models, start by checking the relationship of the signal rotor to the igniter terminal. Then, use a voltmeter to test the alternator and igniter. If the alternator resistance is incorrect, replace the alternator. If the igniter is not functioning correctly, replace it. For 1990 and later Samurai and 1992 and later Sidekick/Tracker models, the ignition system is computer-controlled. These models use a Hall-effect-type device or a Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor instead of an alternator. To test the igniter on 1991 through 1995 models, disconnect the electrical connector and use an ohmmeter to check for continuity. On 1996 through 1998 models, disconnect the electrical connector from the distributor and use an ohmmeter to check for continuity. For 1999 and later models, there is no test for the igniter, so it is recommended to have the coil/igniter units checked by a dealer service department.

If necessary, you should switch the pulley from the old unit to the new one.
