Q:
How do you replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor on Chevrolet Express? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Drain the cooling system below the level of the sensor. The location of the ECT sensor varies depending on the engine type. For 2014 and earlier 4.3L V6, 4.3L V6 and 5.0L, 5.7L and 7.4L V8 engines, it is located at the front of the intake manifold, to the right of the EGR valve. For 2000 and later 4.3L V6 engines, it is on the left side of the left cylinder head. For 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L V8 engines, it is on the left side of the left cylinder head, near the front. For 2018 and later 4.3L V6 engines, it is in the top of the water pump, below the upper radiator hose. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ECT sensor and carefully unscrew it from the intake manifold or cylinder head. Wrap the threads of the sensor with Teflon sealing tape before installing it to prevent leakage. Tighten the sensor to the specific torque and refill the cooling system when finished.

Q:
What does the coolant temperature indicator system consist of on Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana? Posted by Customer
A:
The coolant temperature indicator system consists of a temperature gauge and a coolant temperature sensor. The gauge is mounted in the instrument panel, while the sensor is mounted in the left bank of the engine block. If there is an overheating indication, it is important to check the coolant level and ensure that all connectors in the wiring harness between the sensor and the temperature gauge are tight. In case the gauge is not functioning properly, the circuit can be tested by briefly grounding the wire to the sensor while the ignition is on. If the gauge needle deflects to full hot, the gauge is okay, but if it doesn't respond, the temperature gauge wiring circuit should be checked. If the sensor needs to be replaced, it should be unscrewed from the engine and quickly replaced with a new one, using a conductive sealant on the threads. It is important to wait for the engine to cool down before removing the defective sensor and to be prepared for some coolant loss during the replacement process. Finally, the coolant level should be checked after the new sensor has been installed.
