Q:
How do you remove the Automatic transmission? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the transmission, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable, raising the vehicle, and draining the transmission fluid before reinstalling the pan. Remove the torque converter cover and mark the torque converter and driveplate for proper reassembly. Proceed to remove the driveplate-to-torque converter bolts and the starter motor, and then take off the driveshaft(s) and disconnect any necessary components, such as the vehicle speed sensor, wire harness connectors, vacuum hose (if equipped with a 3L80/3L80-HD), and exhaust components. If equipped with a 4L60 (700R-4), disconnect the TV cable. Disconnect the shift linkage or cable, and support the engine and transmission with jacks. Remove the rear transmission mount-to-crossmember nut, cross-member-to-frame nuts and bolts, and the crossmember. Lower the transmission slightly and disconnect and plug the transmission fluid cooler lines. Remove the transmission dipstick tube, ensuring the torque converter is secured. For installation, confirm the torque converter hub is securely engaged in the pump. If working on 1996 and later models, install new quick-connector fitting E-clips into the transmission cooler line fittings, and then raise the transmission into position while keeping it level to prevent the torque converter from sliding out. Connect the transmission fluid cooler lines and verify a secure connection. Turn the torque converter to align the marks on the converter and driveplate. Carefully move the transmission forward until the dowel pins engage with the bellhousing holes, then install the transmission housing-to-engine bolts and tighten them securely. Install the driveplate-to-torque converter bolts, the crossmember, and lower the mount stud into its hole. Remove the jacks supporting the transmission and engine, and proceed to install the dipstick tube, starter motor, vacuum hose(s) (if equipped), shift and TV linkage or cable, wire harness connectors, torque converter cover, driveshaft(s), speedometer cable, and exhaust system components. Lower the vehicle, fill the transmission with the specified fluid, run the engine, and check for fluid leaks.
