Q:
How do you remove the Trailing Arm? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the trailing arm, start by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle's rear, and supporting it securely on jack stands. Remove the rear wheel and mark the positions of the inner bolt heads or cam adjusters to the subframe before loosening any bolts. Proceed to remove the inner and outer pivot bolts and then the trailing arm. For installation, reverse the removal steps, ensuring the bolts are installed with their heads facing forward. Align the bolt heads or adjuster cams with the previously made marks. Before tightening the mounting bolts, raise the outer end of the lower control arm with a floor jack to simulate normal ride height and then tighten the bolts to the specified torque. It's advisable to have the wheel alignment checked and adjusted if necessary. For the trailing arm removal, follow a similar process of loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, raising the rear of the vehicle, and supporting it securely on jack stands. Remove the rear wheel and proceed to remove the three mounting bolts from the trailing arm to the body bracket. Unbolt the parking brake cable from the trailing arm and then remove the three bolts securing the arm to the knuckle before lifting off the arm. If necessary, remove the through bolt and separate the bracket from the trailing arm. For installation, reverse the removal steps, ensuring all mounting bolts are finger-tight before tightening any of them. Tighten all the fasteners to the specified torque. Consider having the wheel alignment checked and adjusted if needed. To remove the upper control arm, unbolt the trailing arm bracket from the body and mark the position of the cam adjuster on the inner end of the upper control arm. Disconnect the ABS wiring from the upper control arm and remove the through bolt from each end of the upper control arm pivot before lifting out the arm. For installation, loosely install the bolt at each end first. After aligning the adjuster marks, raise the lower control arm to simulate normal ride height, and then tighten the fasteners to the specified torque. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal, and it's recommended to check the wheel alignment and adjust it if necessary. For the lower control arm removal, start by disconnecting the stabilizer link from the lower control arm and unbolt the trailing arm bracket from the body. Position a floor jack under the outer end of the control arm, raise it slightly, and then remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolt and the bumper mounting nut at the center of the bottom of the spring. Loosen the lower control arm inner pivot bolt, remove the outer bolt, and slowly lower the arm, allowing the coil spring to extend. Remove the spring and its lower bumper, and then remove the arm inner bolt and lift out the arm. For installation, reverse the removal process, ensuring the lower control arm is raised to simulate normal ride height before tightening the fasteners to the specified torque. Have the wheel alignment checked after the installation.
