The single serpentine drive belt, situated at the engine's front, is crucial for various components' operation, including the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and air-conditioning compressor. Periodic inspection is necessary due to its material makeup and function. With the engine off, open the hood and manually examine the belt for cracks, ply separation, fraying, and glazing on both sides. Additionally, inspect the ribs' depth on the underside of the belt for evenness. Belt tension, maintained by the tensioner assembly, should be within limits, as indicated on the tension scale. Check it according to the recommended mileage intervals. If damage or wear is evident, replacement is necessary. To replace the belt on 3.1L and 3.8L Engines, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise (using a breaker bar or box-end wrench as necessary) to release tension, noting the routing of the belt before removal. For 3.4L engines, rotate the tensioner clockwise to release tension. Remove the old belt, route the new one over pulleys, and release the tensioner. For 3.1L and 3.4L engines, remove the tensioner by taking out its retaining bolt and reinstall it in reverse order. On 3.8L engines, drain coolant, detach the heater hose adapters, and remove the drivebelt tensioner assembly. Reinstall it following the reverse procedure, refill the cooling system, check for leaks, and start the engine.
