    Q:
How can you check the CV Boot, steering and suspension components on Saturn Vue? Posted by Customer
    A:
To test the steering, set the brake, engage the gear and make sure the wheels are straight on the ground then turn the steering wheel from left to right a while; any play with them shows that some of the parts including the front wheel bearing or the steering gear may be worn. Abnormal signs such as oscillating on the seats, walking around the car or rubbing during turns could indicate that the car's steering or suspension machinery has some defective parts. To test the suspension, press down on each part of the car; if it does not bounce back to normal after one or two jitters, then it is high time the shocks or struts were changed. This can also be accompanied with noises and bouncing while driving and irregular wear or check tire pressure. Check the gear housing to steering wheel shaft joint for any leakage of lubricant and also check for deterioration of dust seals. Check the steering linkage for play and wobble, and examine the track rod joints for increased wear and play, and then check bolts and other parts of the linkage for possible damage. If an assistant is managing to turn the steering wheel, check the freeness and signs of binding in the several parts of the steering. To evaluate ball joints, with a pry bar, check the lower arm for play; if present, the ball joints have to be replaced. Check boots on ball joints for signs of wear and deterioration, and greaser leakage, then replace them if necessary. Finally, look at the CV boots and see if they have any tears, cracks or loose clamps because materials such as water get to the CV joints; any boot should be replaced if damaged.

    Q:
How to remove and replace the inner and outer CV joint and boot of a CV boot on Pontiac Torrent? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove and replace the inner CV joint and boot of a drive axle, start by removing the drive axle from the vehicle and mounting it in a vise lined with wood or rags. Use a center punch to mark the tri-pod and axle shaft for proper reassembly. Remove the stop-ring from the axle shaft and discard it. Clean the old grease from the outer race and tri-pod bearing assembly, inspecting for abnormal wear. To reassemble, slide the clamps and boot onto the axle shaft, install a new stop-ring, place the tri-pod on the shaft, and install a new bearing retainer clip. Apply CV joint grease, slide the boot into place, equalize the pressure, tighten the clamps, and install the drive axle assembly. Remove and discard the bearing retainer clip and slide the boot off the axle shaft. Clean all components and inspect for wear. To reassemble, slide a new sealing boot clamp and boot onto the axle shaft, place a new bearing retainer clip, add grease to the outer CV joint assembly housing and sealing boot, align the splines, and drive the CV joint onto the axle shaft.

    Q:
How to Overhaul and Replace CV Boots on Saturn Vue? Posted by Customer
    A:
If the CV joints are worn, thus requiring an overhaul, consider all the possibilities before commencing with the job as it is possible to order for a complete rebuilt CV Boot and exchange it which would be so helpful. Some auto parts stores offer split-type replacement boots but these can be fitted without pulling the CV Boot off the vehicle, although it is recommended to pull the CV Boot off and unbolt the CV joint so that it can be cleaned, although dirty contaminants are likely to speedy up the wear of the joint. Similar operations are done to rear and front CV Boots. First of all, disconnect the CV Boot from the car and align in the vice, but idlers of the jaws you have to cover with the jackets of wood or rags. Slip the boot up over the shaft and open boot end, then unbolt and withdraw the boot clamps, pull the boot back from the inner CV joint, and slide the joint housing off, noting the relation of the tri-pod to the outer race. Centre punch the tri-pod and axleshaft for correct assembly, then, pry the ends of the stop-ring to unlock the retainer clip from the axleshaft. Using hammer and brass punch, drive the tri-pod joint from the CV Boot but ensure that the bearing surfaces and splines ought not to be spoilt. Wash out the old grease from the outer race and the tri-pod bearing assembly and if there are signs of excessive wear replace them. To reassemble the clamps and boot, one has to slide them over the axleshaft then wrap the splines with tape to avoid damage to the outer surface of the clamps and boot; a new stop-ring is added while aligning the tri-pod to the marks made previously. CV joint grease should then be applied on the tri-pod assembly, the joint housing and the boot, the boot is then installed and the pressure inside is balanced. This is done to either snug the clamps on the boot using the methods to fit the type of clamps in use. On the outer CV joint you must remove the clips of the CV joint boot, then using a soft face hammer hitting the edge of the housing of the CV joint will cause it to come off from the axleshaft and the CV joint outer boot can now be removed. Wash all the parts well and look for signs of wear which would necessitate a change of the whole CV Boot. To reassemble, fit a new sealing boot clamp as well as boot on the axleshaft and encase the splines with tape after which fit a new retainer bearing clip within the outer CV joint assembly and pack into it as much grease as is possible. Squash the splines of the CV joint and with the help of a mallet, press the CV joint onto the axleshaft, while ensuring that equal pressure is applied on the boot clamps then tighten the same and finally fit the CV Boot assembly.
