Q:
How to remove and install the cooling fans in Saturn LS and LS1? Posted by Customer
A:
These models are equipped with both a puller fan (radiator fan) mounted on the radiator inside the engine compartment and a pusher fan (condenser fan) located in front of the condenser behind the bumper cover. The speed and duration of both fans are regulated by a fan control module and the PCM, based on engine temperature and air conditioning usage. The fans are protected by Radiator fan #1 and Radiator fan #2 fuses located in the engine compartment fuse/relay box. If the engine is overheating and the radiator fan is not coming on, it is recommended to unplug the fan motor electrical connector(s) and connect the motor directly to the battery with fused jumper wires. If the fan motor does not come on, it should be replaced. If the radiator fan motor is functioning properly but not coming on when the engine gets hot, the fan relay may be defective. Checking the control circuits should be left to a dealer service department. To remove the puller fan on a 4-cylinder model, the negative battery terminal should be disconnected, followed by lifting the fan control module off the bracket and removing the battery. The fan motor electrical connector(s) should be disconnected, along with the fan motor harness clips from the fan shroud. The fan motor mounting bolts can then be removed, allowing for the removal of the radiator fan assembly from the radiator. For V6 models, the removal process is similar, but additional steps include removing the power steering fluid reservoir, disconnecting the upper transaxle cooler line from the radiator, draining the engine coolant, and removing the radiator upper hose. The installation process is the reverse of removal, with the battery being reconnected and the engine being started to check for leaks and proper fan operation. For pusher fan removal, the negative battery terminal should be disconnected, followed by disconnecting the fan motor electrical connector(s). The vehicle should be raised and supported securely on jackstands, and the fan motor mounting bolts can then be removed. The top section of the pusher fan shroud should be lowered to release it from the clips, allowing for the removal of the pusher fan assembly from the condenser. The installation process is the reverse of removal, with the battery being reconnected and the engine being started to check for leaks and proper fan operation.
