    Q:
What steps should be taken before beginning work on the Automatic Transmission Filter replacement on Chevrolet Camaro? Posted by Customer
    A:
As a preparation for work, one should acquire the transmission fluid as described along with a new filter. Of necessity there is also needed a floor jack, jack stands for placing the car in an elevated position, the large drain pan capable to contain at least 5 quarts of liquid, newspapers, and rags. Loosen the tension of the upper suspension bushing with the vehicle on the ground, then safely lift the vehicle and place jack stands under it, then remove the engine splash shield. Make sure the vehicle is upright to an optimal position. Put the drain pan below the transmission fluid pan, paste off the front and sideward pan fasteners, and turn the rear pan nuts almost four times. Tap on the bottom of the transmission pan, slightly loosening the pan while you keep the rear bolts intact but loose so as to allow the fluid to drain. Take out all the bolts and dispense with the pan and gasket too, and drain any remaining fluid. Machine and scrape the gasket surface of the transmission so as to remove every particle of the gasket and sealant that was previously used. Clean the fluid pan with solvent and after that, tap it and allow it to dry but before you do that pull out the magnet from the bottom of the pan and clean it. Take the filter and pull it downwards from the transmission: this is very important, do not break off the filter tube in the housing. Take off the filter seal from the transmission then put in a new seal using seal puller and slide hammer attachment for the older seal while the new seal is inserted to its bore using hammer and seal driver. Next, be sure the gasket surface of the transmission pan is clean and install a new gasket to the pan inserting the locking tabs in the center holes and making certain that the magnet is properly positioned. Insert the pan against the transmission and spin each bolt a little at a time and finally tighten it. Replace the old fluid with a new one, ensuring to follow the manufacture's recommendations as to how much should be added. It should be noted to put the parking brake whenever there is transmission in Park and to accelerate the engine to a fast idle but not racing it. Engage the gear selector through all the gears and reverse, getting back to Park and check the fluid level whereby it will majorly be low now. Since the newly installed systems may have Minute leakage, it is advisable to check for leaks underneath the car after few trips. The old fluid removed from the transmission cannot be reprocessed and must be discarded as such. They should be disposed of through an auto parts store, disposal facility or the relevant environmental agency, to find out if they are willing to recycle it. In the case of small quantities it can be left to cool and then poured into a container, and more significantly, should not be poured on the floor or emptied down the drain.

    Q:
What steps should be taken before beginning work on the transmission fluid and Automatic Transmission Filter change on Chevrolet Corvette? Posted by Customer
    A:
The transmission fluid of the described car has to be bought beforehand as well as the new filter, the required tools including the floor jack, jack stands to support the car, the drain pan that can hold at least 5 quarts, the newspapers, and the clean rags. Lift the car and put it safely on some stands and then remove the lower shield of the vehicle though it is done while the car is leveled. Position the drain pan beneath the transmission fluid pan, then unscrew the front and side pan mounting bolts, then turn the rear ones a turn or four. Removal of the transmission pan requires loosening of the rear bolts to create a gap then pulling the front of the pan down with the help of a screwdriver. Disengage the remaining bolts and pull out the pan and gasket, and empty the last of the fluid and then clean the gasket surface of the transmission very thoroughly, to make sure that all traces of the old gasket and sealant have been swept away. Disconnect and clean the fluid pan using a solvent, then renew the magnet mounted at the base of the pan, at that point clean it. Very carefully pull the filter straight down out of the transmission, if the filter tube breaks off in the housing it will be very difficult to replace later, remove the filter seal and install a new one using a seal puller and slide hammer attachment. Before, placing the gasket make sure the surface of the transmission pan is clean, place a new gasket on the pan then start inserting two bolts if the gasket doesn't have locking tabs. Ensure that there is a magnet if available, align the pan to the transmission and fasten each bolt incrementally to the final stage without overtightening, ensure that oil pan bolts are well inserted for better fitting. Fill in the new fluid to the advised level of transmission, next, rev up the engine to fast idle while setting the gear to park and parking brake engaged. Operate the gear selector through each gear and back to the park position in order to check the fluid level, however this is normally very low at this position. During the initial runs of the car, check underneath the vehicle for signs of leakage, and finally, note that the material removed from the transmission cannot be reclaimed and should be discharged correspondingly. Consult local auto parts stores, disposal facilities or local environmental agency for the disposal, once the fluid is cool, drain it into a disposal container and transport it for disposal and do not dispose it by pouring it on the ground or in the drains.
