    Q:
How to remove and install a diesel injection fuel pump on Buick Century? Posted by Customer
    A:
First of all, you need to open the lid of the engine and take out the air cleaner and having turned off the negative terminal of the battery. Disconnect the pump electrical connector by pulling the retention clip then removing the connector and finally, unscrew of the 3/4 in. wrench to fasten the inlet fitting during the unscrewing of the inlet tube with a size of 5/8 inches. wrench. Remove the outlet tube. For installation first unscrew the dust plugs provided in the inlet and outlet of the pump. Screw down the pump and bracket assembly onto the position on the engine using the mounts bolts to 18 ft lbs torque. (24 Nm). Ford in particular recommends that you compact the inlet and outlet fuel lines to a torque of 19 ft. lbs (26 Nm). In case of the need, change the position of the pump by slightly unscrewing the top bracket screw and rotating the pump. Connect the negative battery cable back again. After replacing the pump unscrew the fuel line at the filter, connect the ignition 'ON' and release fuel lines. Even if only a clicking sound can be heard from the pump, or air bubbles in the fuel, examine or the line for leaks and all joints should be dried. After that turning sound is gone, draw the line in more tightly.

    Q:
What type of fuel pumps are used on all carbureted engines, and how do they operate on Buick Century? Posted by Customer
    A:
Single-action mechanical fuel pumps operate on every carbureted engine through constant connection of the rocker arm spring to the camshaft eccentric. When the rocker arm travels upward the fuel link operates to draw the diaphragm lower which expands the fuel chamber and allows fuel intake from the tank. The carburetor obtains fuel from the pump whenever the outlet line creates pressure that is lower than the tension of the diaphragm spring. The fuel pumps on Century models has sealed components which need replacement when a defect appears. The procedure to remove the mechanical fuel pump begins with localizing it before disconnecting the fuel lines then removing its mounting bolts to replace the defective gasket. All mating surfaces need cleaning before installing a new gasket for the engine along with reconnecting fuel lines before starting an engine leak test. To perform the test you should check whether the system experiences leaks within the suction and pressure parts while also tightening loose connections before verifying correct fuel flow and system pressure. The fuel pipe at carburetor should have continuous fuel flow. Clogged pipes or defective pumps could be the cause of no fuel flow. The pressure test gauge must be installed to verify pump performance within 450-1,000 rpm at specified limits while constant pressure confirms proper operation but replacement is necessary when pressures are outside of range.

    Q:
How to disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and remove the fuel pump on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the cable from the negative terminal post with the anti theft activate off on models with Delco LoeII audio system. Remove the fuel inlet and outlet lines using two wrenches: An open-end wrench on the fuel pump and a flare-nut wrench on the fuel line fitting, you do not want to mar the pump and connections with a conventional wrench. , then remove the fuel pump mounting bolts, the pump, and the gasket are next. For the V6 engines, the next step is to move the pushrod whereas, for the V8 engines, it is necessary to take out two bolts-it is necessary to take out the fuel pump adapter gasket alongside it-and then eliminate the pushrod. Remove all traces of gasket material and sealant from the fuel pump, adapter, and engine block, apply heavy duty grease on the pushrod to lock it up and then fit it in the engine block. On V8 models, screw the adapter plate with a new gasket and then place the pump with a new gasket on it and used gasket sealant on the screw threads. Last but not least, fasten the fuel lines, kick the starter, and, if there are no leaks, you are good to go.

    Q:
Where is the fuel pump located, and what steps should be taken to inspect and test it in carbureted engine on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
On V6 models the fuel pump is located on the left-front side of the engine while on V8 models it is on the right front side of the engine. The two kinds of fuel pumps are integrated and are not serviceable, however, the pumps can be checked on the vehicle. There must be fuel in the tank and where there is leakage at the connecting end between the fuel tank and the carburetor, then tight them so that GASOLINE does not come out of them. Examine the tubes for flat areas and bends that can give rise to a restricted fuel flow; air leaks or restrictions on the suction side of the fuel pump will have a very short effect on the fuel pump output. Also, verify existence of the fuel pump diaphragm flange leaks, Remove the ignition primary connector at distributor if there is or ignition coil; pull the fuel inlet line out from the carburetor and connect the line with rubber fuel hose and dip the other end in a receptacle containing approved gasoline. Turn the engine several times to ensure that fuel jets skew out clearly from the wide end of the line; if not, it may be that the supply of fuel is blocked or the pump has malfunctioned. Last of all, screw a fuel pressure gauge at the fuel line's end and turn the engine for a number of revolutions and read at the pressure on the gauge, which should range from 5 to 7 psi. If fuel pressure is low and fuel line is not restricted then fuel pump must be replacement with a new one.
