    Q:
What types of alternators are used, and what maintenance is required for them on Chevrolet El Camino? Posted by Customer
    A:
The alternator used in all models is a Delco-Remy Delcotron, with three types available, The range includes the 5.5 inch Series 1D, 10DN Series 100B and the Series 10SI although the first two need an independent voltage regulator and the last one has a built in regulator. This involves now and then dusting with a soft cloth to remove dirt or oil, or simply checking the tension of the driving belt; no lubrication is required because the bearings of the alternator are greased for life. Special precautions have to be taken when making the connections of the circuits; when connecting the alternator to a battery, one has to ensure that the correct polarity is used, using a tool, always remove the connector from the alternator end and the positive terminal end of the battery and never start the unit with the battery charger connected, and both the battery leads shall be disconnected.

    Q:
How to disconnect and remove an alternator from an engine compartment on Chevrolet El Camino? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect both leads from the battery terminals and the leads from the rear face of the alternator, marking them first to ensure correct installation. Loosen the alternator mounting and adjuster link bolts, push the unit in towards the engine as far as possible, and slip off the drivebelts. Remove the mounting bolts and lift the alternator from the engine compartment. Installation is a reversal of removal, adjusting the drivebelt tension as needed. New alternators typically do not come with pulleys, so the old one should be removed if a new unit is to be purchased; to do this, hold the alternator shaft still with an Allen wrench while unscrewing the pulley nut.

    Q:
What are the maintenance requirements and precautions for the Delco-Remy Delcotron Series 10SI alternator on Oldsmobile Cutlass? Posted by Customer
    A:
The alternator fitted to all models is a Delco-Remy Delcotron Series 10SI, and requires virtually no upkeep other than cleaning dust or any oil that might have congealed upon it occasionally. The driving belt should also be checked for the level of tension and as for the lubrication, none is necessary since the alternator bearings are grease packed for the life of the alternator. When connecting circuits to a vehicle with an alternator particular care is required to ensure correct polarity when connecting to the alter-nator from a battery. Prior to application of electric-arc welding for repair, a connector between alternator and positive terminal of battery should be disconnected. The battery should never be charged and the car started at the same time and the battery leads should be disconnected when a mains charger is in use. When boosting from another battery connections should be made in parallel where it is preferable to use thick cable. DIY testing of an alternator is not advised because to do so requires some unique instruments and charging the testing on a car may often cause harm to the alternator, thus it is advisable for one to ask for the services of the automotive electrical technicians.
