Q:
How to inspect and replace rubber brake hoses? Posted by Customer
A:
Every six months, it is important to inspect the rubber hoses that connect the steel brake lines with the front and rear brake assemblies for any cracks, chafing, leaks, blisters, or other damage. This inspection should be thorough, using a light and mirror if necessary, and any hose exhibiting these conditions should be replaced with a new one. When replacing the front brake hose, disconnect the brake line from the hose fitting using a back-up wrench, being careful not to bend the frame bracket or brake line. Remove the U-clip from the female fitting at the bracket and detach the hose from the bracket. At the caliper end of the hose, remove the bolt from the fitting block and remove the hose and copper washers. When installing the new hose, use new copper washers on either side of the fitting block and lubricate all bolt threads with clean brake fluid. Attach the hose to the caliper, making sure not to twist it, and install the female fitting in the hose bracket. Use the U-clip to retain the female fitting to the frame bracket. Attach the brake line to the hose fitting using a back-up wrench. Ensure there are no kinks in the hose and that it does not contact any part of the suspension. For the rear brake hose, disconnect the hose at the frame bracket using a back-up wrench, being careful not to bend the bracket or steel lines. Remove the U-clip and separate the female fitting from the bracket. Disconnect the two hydraulic lines at the junction block and remove the hose. Install the female end of the new hose in the frame bracket, bolt the junction block to the support bracket, and connect the lines securely. Use U-clips to retain the female end to the bracket. Attach the steel line fittings to the female fittings using a back-up wrench, being careful not to bend the bracket or steel line. Check that the frame bracket is not loosened and tighten if necessary. Fill the master cylinder reservoir and bleed the system. When replacing metal brake lines, use the correct steel brake lines and avoid using copper tubing. Prefabricated brake lines with flared tube ends and fittings are available, or you can obtain the recommended steel tubing and fittings to match the line to be replaced. Cut the new tubing to length, allowing extra for flaring the ends, and install the fitting over the cut tubing. Flare the ends of the line with a flaring tool and carefully bend the line to the proper shape if needed.
