The exhaust system components get very hot during engine operation. No part of the exhaust should be touched until the entire system has completely cooled. Be especially careful around the catalytic converter, where the highest temperatures are generated. For a four-cylinder engine, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the catalytic converter splash shield and disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold flange. Remove the springs from the exhaust pipe bracket and the cradle corners. Disconnect the exhaust pipe U-bolt from the support bracket and remove the springs from both ends of the muffler. Disconnect the bracket bolt and remove the entire exhaust system. If replacing the muffler or catalytic converter, take the exhaust system to a dealer service department or muffler shop. For a V6 engine, begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and raising the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the splash shield, U-clamp, and catalytic converter splash shield. Remove the exhaust pipe U-bolt from the support bracket and the crossover pipe-to-exhaust manifold flange bolts. Remove the exhaust pipe-to-crossover pipe flange bolts and the crossover pipe. Remove the muffler-to-cradle spring hangers and the exhaust pipe-to-cradle spring hangers. Finally, remove the catalytic converter/exhaust pipe/muffler assembly as a unit. To install, reverse the removal steps, ensuring all bolts and nuts are tightened securely. Lower the vehicle, connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery, and start the engine to check for exhaust leaks.
