    Q:
How can the harmonic balancer be checked and balanced to eliminate vibration in V6 engine on Chevrolet Caprice? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure applies only to 231 cu in V6 engines, where the harmonic balancer can be checked for vibration and balanced to eliminate any vibration. To determine the engine speed at which a vibration occurs, use a tachometer. Place a small amount of body putty or similar material on the inside surface of the fan driving pulley, then run the engine at the speed during which the vibration occurred and note if it persists. Use varying amounts of putty and repeat the procedure until the vibration is decreased. When the vibration is considerably decreased or eliminated, mark the hole drilled in the balancer that is nearest to the putty. Cut a piece of 7/16 in iron rod to approximately a 1/2 in length and, using a chisel, upset a small amount of material on the side of the rod piece. Install the rod piece in the previously marked hole, and if necessary, install additional pieces of rod in the balancer until the vibration is gone.

    Q:
How to Remove and Install a Harmonic Balancer in V8 engine on Chevrolet Caprice? Posted by Customer
    A:
If the engine has been removed from the car, disregard the following steps which do not apply. Loosen the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor as required to relieve tension on the drive belts. Remove the cooling fan and the radiator shroud. Take off the drive belts, noting the installed positions of each. Remove the fan pulley from the water pump shaft and the accessory drive pulley from the harmonic balancer, then take out the harmonic balancer retaining bolt at the center. Install a special harmonic balancer remover to the balancer and carefully draw it off the crankshaft, ensuring not to drop it as it breaks free; avoid using a common gear puller to prevent separating the outer portion of the balancer from the inner hub, and use only a puller that bolts to the inner hub. Before installing the harmonic balancer, coat the front cover seal area on the balancer with engine oil. Position the balancer over the key on the crankshaft, ensuring the balancer key way aligns with the key. Using a harmonic balancer installer, draw the balancer onto the crankshaft, distributing the draw evenly around the inner hub. Remove the installation tool and install the harmonic balancer center retaining bolt, torquing to specifications. Follow the removal procedure in reverse order for the remaining components.
