A failure in the water pump can lead to serious engine damage due to overheating. One indication of a failure in the shaft seal on the water pump is the presence of a coolant leak, which can usually be observed coming from that area. Most water pumps are equipped with small weep or vent holes, and although it may seem challenging, it is possible to check these holes for leaks using a flashlight and a mirror. In most cases, the leak can be detected from coolant streams or drips near the bottom of the water pump housing. If the water pump shaft bearings fail, there may be a howling sound near the water pump while it's running, and with the engine off, shaft wear can be felt by rocking the water pump pulley up and down. It is important not to mistake drivebelt slippage, which causes a squealing sound, for water pump bearing failure. A quick check to assess water pump performance is to turn the heater on, as a failing pump might not be able to efficiently circulate hot water all the way to the heater core as it should.

To remove the water pump from the engine, you should carefully remove it, tapping it gently if it's stuck.

To remove a V8 engine, follow the same steps as for a V6 engine, but also remove the battery and battery tray for access.
