Q:
How to Inspect and Refinish Brake Disc for Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana? Posted by Customer
A:
To inspect the brakes, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the vehicle on jackstands. Make sure to apply the parking brake and remove the wheels. Visually inspect the disc surface for any score marks or damage. Light scratches and shallow grooves are normal and won't affect brake operation, but deep grooves require disc removal and refinishing by a machine shop. Check both sides of the disc. To check disc runout, place a dial indicator about 1/2-inch from the outer edge of the disc and set it to zero. Turn the disc and make sure the indicator reading does not exceed the runout limit specifications. If it does, the disc should be refinished. It's recommended to have the discs refinished when replacing brake pads to ensure a smooth finish and eliminate any brake pedal pulsation. If you choose not to have them resurfaced, remove the glaze from the surface using emery cloth or sandpaper. Make sure the disc thickness is not less than the specified minimum thickness, which is cast into the disc, by checking it with a micrometer. For removal, remove the brake calipers without disconnecting the brake hoses and hang them out of the way. On newer models, remove the caliper mounting bracket. For front discs, remove the grease cap, wheel bearing retainer nut, spindle nut, outer bearing retainer washer, and outer wheel bearing before removing the disc/hub. For rear discs, simply slide the disc off the wheel studs. Installation is the reverse of removal, making sure to tighten the caliper mounting bracket and wheel lug nuts to the correct torque specifications. Lower the vehicle and ensure everything is securely in place.
