Q:
What steps are involved in installing the driveaxle for the 2000 Saturn LS1? Posted by Customer
A:
To install the driveaxle, remove the old set-ring and replace it with a new one. Apply multi-purpose grease around the splines of the joints. Hold the driveaxle straight out and push it in sharply to seat the driveaxle set-ring. Check that the set-ring is properly seated by attempting to pull the inner CV joint housing out of the transaxle by hand.

Q:
How do you remove the driveaxle? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the axle shaft, start by setting the parking brake and removing the wheel cover or hubcap. Then, remove the cotter pin from the axle shaft/hub nut and loosen the nut with a large socket and breaker bar. Next, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel and the axle shaft/hub nut and washer. Disconnect the tie-rod end and separate the control arm from the steering knuckle. To loosen the axle shaft from the hub splines, tap the end of the axle shaft with a soft-faced hammer or use a puller if necessary. Pull out on the steering knuckle and detach the axle shaft from the hub, suspending the outer end with a bungee cord or wire. Before removing the axle shaft, check for lubricant leakage around the differential seal and replace if necessary. Position a prybar against the inner joint and carefully pry it off the transaxle side gear. Remove the axle shaft assembly, being careful not to over-extend the inner joint or damage the axle shaft boots. If the transaxle stub shaft comes out with the axle shaft on the right side, inspect the axle shaft oil seal for damage and replace if needed. To install the axle shaft, remove the old set-ring and replace it with a new one. Apply multi-purpose grease around the splines of the joints. Hold the axle shaft straight out and push it in sharply to seat the axle shaft set-ring. Check that the set-ring is properly seated by attempting to pull the inner CV joint housing out of the transaxle by hand. Clean the axle shaft outer CV joint threads and coat the splines with multi-purpose grease. Guide the axle shaft into the hub splines and install the new axle shaft/hub nut, tightening it securely. Reconnect the control arm and tie-rod end, then tighten the suspension fasteners. Install the wheel and lug nuts, then lower the vehicle. Finally, tighten the axle shaft/hub nut and install a new cotter pin. Tighten the wheel lug nuts and add transaxle lubricant if necessary.
