Q:
What is the purpose of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system and PCV Valve for Cadillac DeVille and DTS? Posted by Customer
A:
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system reduces hydrocarbon emissions by circulating fresh air through the crankcase to pick up blow-by gases, which are then drawn by intake manifold vacuum through the PCV valve to the throttle body or intake manifold to be burned in the engine. The PCV system consists of the PCV valve, which regulates the flow of gases according to engine speed and manifold vacuum, and the two hoses. On some later models, the "dirty air" tube, which carries blow-by gases from the crankcase, through the PCV valve and to the throttle body, is routed under the intake manifold. One hose directs fresh outside air from the air intake duct to the crankcase and the other directs crankcase gases from the crankcase, through the PCV valve and into the throttle body. It's easy to check the PCV system for correct operation. Inspect the PCV system regularly, because carbon and gunk deposited by blow-by gases will eventually clog the PCV valve, the "dirty" side system hose and the area inside the throttle body, behind the throttle plate. The common symptoms of a plugged or clogged PCV valve include a rough idle, stalling or a slow idle speed, oil leaks, oil in the air cleaner or sludge in the engine. Q:
What is the purpose of a Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system and PCV Valve for Cadillac ElDorado and Fleetwood? Posted by Customer
A:
A Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system is used to consume crankcase vapors in the combustion process instead of venting them to the atmosphere. In gasoline engines, small amounts of the combustion gas leak past the piston rings into the crankcase. These crankcase blow-by gases contain undesirable hydrocarbon air pollutants. The PCV system is used to prevent these vapors from escaping into the atmosphere while allowing proper ventilation of the crankcase to maintain good oil quality. The PCV system should be checked at every oil change and serviced every 30,000 miles (48,000 km). Never operate an engine without a PCV valve or a ventilation system, for it can become damaged. To remove and install the PCV valve, first locate the PCV valve; usually located either in the valve cover or in the intake manifold. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from the positive crankcase ventilation valve. Remove the PCV valve from the PCV valve grommet. To install, insert the PCV valve into the grommet and connect the ventilation tube to the PCV valve.

Q:
How do I check and replace the PCV valve in my Chevrolet Blazer,S10,GMC Jimmy and Sonoma? Posted by Customer
A:
With the engine idling at normal operating temperature, pull the valve (with hose attached) out of the rubber grommet in the valve cover. On V6 engines, the PCV valve is located in the valve cover. To check it, pull it out and feel for suction and shake it to make sure it rattles. Place your finger over the end of the valve. If there is no vacuum at the valve, check for a plugged hose, manifold port, or the valve itself. Replace any plugged or deteriorated hoses. Turn off the engine and shake the PCV valve, listening for a rattle. If the valve doesn't rattle, replace it with a new one. To replace the valve, pull it out of the end of the hose, noting its installed position and direction. When purchasing a replacement PCV valve, make sure it's for your particular vehicle, model year and engine size. Compare the old valve with the new one to make sure they are the same. Push the valve into the end of the hose until it's seated. Inspect the rubber grommet for damage and replace it with a new one if necessary. Finally, push the PCV valve and hose securely into position in the valve cover.

Q:
What should you do if you don't feel any vacuum when checking the PCV valve for the 1999 Chevrolet C1500? Posted by Customer
A:
If you don't feel any vacuum, this could indicate a clogged hose, manifold port, or the valve itself. In this case, any plugged or deteriorated hoses should be replaced.

Q:
What is the purpose of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system and PCV Valve on Chevrolet Express? Posted by Customer
A:
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system serves to reduce hydrocarbon emissions by scavenging crankcase vapors rich in unburned hydrocarbons. In contrast to conventional PCV systems, the system in these vehicles does not rely on intake manifold vacuum for scavenging crankcase gases. Instead, it operates by maintaining a pressure differential in the crankcase, achieved by connecting a fresh air inlet hose from the air intake duct or resonator box to the valve cover, allowing fresh air to equalize the pressure. Another hose connects the left valve cover to the intake manifold, drawing in crankcase vapors. The PCV valve regulates vapor flow into the intake manifold based on intake vacuum levels. The PCV system configuration varies by engine model. It's crucial to inspect PCV system hoses for damage, clogs, or leaks when servicing the engine. Clogged or leaking hoses can lead to rough idling, stalling, high or low idle speeds, oil leaks, or sludge buildup. A simple functional check involves verifying vacuum presence in the PCV hose, assessing vacuum gauge readings during engine operation, and diagnosing issues like leaks, blockages, or excessive crankcase pressure that may affect PCV system performance.

Q:
How do you replace the PCV valve for the 1992 Chevrolet K1500? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the PCV valve, pull the valve out of the end of the hose, remembering how it was positioned. When buying a new PCV valve, ensure it's the correct one for your vehicle and engine size by comparing it to the old valve. Once you have the new valve, push it into the end of the hose until it's seated. Check the rubber grommet for any damage and replace it if necessary. Finally, push the PCV valve and hose back into their original position.

Q:
Where is the PCV valve located and how do you check and replace it for Chevrolet Avalanche,Silverado,Suburban,Tahoe and GMC Sierra,Yukon,Yukon Denali,Yukon XL? Posted by Customer
A:
The PCV valve is located in the left valve cover. With the engine idling at normal operating temperature, pull the valve (with hose attached) from the rubber grommet in the cover. Place your finger over the valve opening. If there's no vacuum at the valve, check for a plugged hose, manifold port, or the valve itself. Replace any plugged or deteriorated hoses. Turn off the engine and shake the PCV valve, listening for a rattle. If the valve doesn't rattle, replace it with a new one. To replace the valve, pull it from the end of the hose, noting its installed position. When purchasing a replacement PCV valve, make sure it's for your particular vehicle and engine size. Compare the old valve with the new one to make sure they're the same. Push the valve into the end of the hose until it's seated. Inspect the rubber grommet for damage and hardening. Replace it with a new one if necessary. Push the PCV valve and hose securely into position.
