How to replace alternator Brush for Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
A:
The following procedure applies only to SI type alternators. CS types have riveted housings and cannot be disassembled. First, remove the alternator from the vehicle. Then, scribe or paint marks on the front and rear end frame housings of the alternator to facilitate reassembly. Mark the drive end frame and rectifier end frame assemblies with a scribe or paint before separating the two halves. Next, remove the four through-bolts holding the front and rear end frames together, then separate the drive end frame from the rectifier end frame. Carefully separate the drive end frame and the rectifier end frame assemblies. After that, remove the nuts retaining the stator leads to the rectifier bridge and separate the stator from the end frame. After removing the nuts retaining the stator leads to the rectifier bridge, remove the stator. Then, remove the screw attaching the diode trio to the end frame and remove the trio. Remove the screws attaching the resistor (not used on all models), brush holder and voltage regulator to the end frame and remove the brush holder and voltage regulator. After removing the screws that attach the brush holder, the resistor (if equipped) and voltage regulator to the end frame, remove the brush holder and voltage regulator. Next, remove the brushes from the brush holder by slipping the brush retainer off the brush holder. Slip the brush retainer off the brush holder and remove the brushes. Then, remove the springs from the brush holder. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following: When installing the brushes in the brush holder, install the brush closest to the end frame first. Slip the paper clip through the rear of the end frame to hold the brush, then insert the second brush and push the paper clip in to hold both brushes while reassembly is completed. The paper clip should not be removed until the front and rear end frames have been bolted together. To hold the brushes in place during reassembly, insert a paper clip like this through the hole in the end frame nearest the rotor shaft.

Q:
How to remove and reinstall Alternator Brush from a Pontiac Fiero? Posted by Customer
A:
Remove the alternator from the vehicle. Scribe or paint marks on the front and rear end frame housings of the alternator to facilitate reassembly. Mark the drive end frame assembly and rectifier end frame assembly with a scribe or paint before pulling the two halves apart. From the rear of the alternator, insert a paper clip through the rear end frame to hold the brushes in place. A paper clip is inserted from the rear of the alternator to hold the brushes in place during disassembly and reassembly. Your alternator may look slightly different than this one. Remove the four through-bolts holding the front and rear end frames together, then separate the drive end frame from the rectifier end frame with the paper clip still in place. Remove the bolts holding the stator to the rear end frame and separate the stator from the end frame. Remove the nuts attaching the diode trio to the rectifier bridge and remove the diode trio. Remove the paper clip from the rear of the end frame while holding your hand over the end of the brush holder to catch the brushes as they are released. Remove the bolts holding the resistor and regulator to the end frame and remove the regulator. Remove the brushes from the regulator by slipping the brush retainer off the regulator. Remove the springs from the brush holder. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. When installing the brushes in the brush holder, install the brush closest to the end frame first. Slip the paper clip through the rear of the end frame to hold the brush, then insert the second brush and push the paper clip in to hold both brushes while reassembly is completed. The paper clip should not be removed until the front and rear end frames have been bolted together.
