To disconnect the CKP sensor on a 2014 and earlier 4.3L V6 or a 5.0L, 5.7L or 7.4L V8 engine, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Then, raise the front end of the vehicle and secure it on jackstands. Next, disconnect the electrical connector from the CKP sensor and remove the sensor mounting bolt. Remove the sensor from the engine and inspect the 0-ring for any damage. If necessary, replace the 0-ring. Apply a small amount of engine oil to the 0-ring and install the CKP sensor, making sure to tighten the mounting bolt securely. For 2018 and later 4.3L V6, 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L V8 engines, remove the starter motor and disconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector from the main engine harness. Remove the sensor mounting bolt and the sensor itself. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring that the CMP sensor mounting bolt is tightened securely. After completing the installation, start the engine and check if the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is illuminated. If so, it may indicate a Diagnostic Trouble Code (OTC) related to the CKP system variation not learned. A dealer technician can perform the necessary procedure to relearn the variation between the CKP and CMP sensors and clear the OTC from the PCM's memory. If you experience any driveability issues, have a qualified repair shop perform the CKP system variation learn procedure and clear the OTC.
