Disconnect the negative cable from the battery and ensure it is placed away from the terminal to prevent accidental contact, especially on models with an anti-theft audio system, which should be disabled before any power disruption. Raise the vehicle securely and place the transmission in Neutral with the parking brake off. Mark the driveshaft and differential flange alignment to ensure proper reinstallation for balance, and remove the rear universal joint strap bolts and straps, adjusting the driveshaft or tires for accessibility. Tape the bearing caps to the spider to prevent them from coming off during removal, then lower the rear of the driveshaft and slide the front out of the transmission without prying on the universal joint or yoke, avoiding sharp angles that could damage the joint. Inspect the joint and yoke splines for wear, and if servicing the driveshaft, avoid clamping it in a vise to prevent deformation. To protect against fluid loss and contamination, wrap a plastic bag over the transmission housing while the driveshaft is out. After removal, clean the area and inspect the oil seal before sliding the front of the driveshaft back into the transmission. Raise the rear into position, ensuring the marks align perfectly, and if necessary, turn the rear wheels to match the pinion flange. Finally, remove the tape from the bearing caps and install the straps and bolts, tightening them to the specified torque.
