The windshield wiper and blade assembly are to be checked regularly for signs of damages and defects such as the presence of loose parts, damaged or broken blade parts, and worn out blades and rubber part of the wiper. Dirt can accumulate on the wiper blades and reduce its ability to clean hence it has to be cleaned using a mild detergent every sometimes. The wiping mechanism of the windscreen can also lead to unfastened bolts, nuts and other fasteners on the vehicle and as such, when inspecting the wiper blades, they should be tightened as required. If the wiper blade elements get split or has lost most of its contact area through wearing or gets weird when rolled back into shape, they should be replaced with new ones. To install the wiper blade/arm assembly, push the wiper blade to the wiper arm and then release the connector, place the wiper blade assembly over the retaining stud of the windshield wiper arm and snap it into place. Bend in and out the piece of metal by using the needle-nose pliers, then remove the old element and replace it with a new one by using the metal clip in order to lock the new element. If it is a multiple-bank element, pinch the tabs at the end to slide the element out of the blade assembly and then take the new element and the old one and compare for length and design if necessary. Insert the new element in the position which, then, will lock into the right place; replace the blade assembly on the arm, moisten the windshield and test the operation.

Since road film can accumulate on wiper blades and reduce their efficiency, they should be washed frequently with a mild detergent solution. The wiping action can loosen the nuts, bolts and fasteners so these should be examined and tightened as necessary when the wiper blades are inspected. Any wiper blade insert that has cracks, wear or is warped should be replaced. To do this simply pull the wiper blade/arm assembly away from the glass. Push down on the blade-to-arm connector and move it back toward you to release the blade assembly from the wiper arm and off of the retaining stud. Now use needle-nose pliers to push in/pull out two metal clip then slide old element out slide new one in lock into place with metal clip. Squeeze tabs at end of then slide element out of blade assembly. Compare new element with old one for length, design etc, Slide new element into position; it will automatically click into place at right location. Reinstall blade assembly onto arm, wet windshield or rear window then check to make sure they work properly.

To remove the wiper arm/blade assembly, pull it away from the windshield glass while counteracting the tension of the wiper arm spring. Then, depress the small tab located below the wiper arm at the blade connector socket and detach the blade from the arm. In some cases, a coil spring blade retainer may be present, in which case you should insert a screwdriver on top of the spring and push downwards to remove the blade. To reinstall, simply reverse the removal process, ensuring that the connector is fully pushed onto the arm and that the small locating 'pip' securely fits into the hole in the connector.

Two methods retain the wiper blade element. One uses a red press-button; press it to slide the element off and push the new one until it locks. The other has a spring-type clip at the element's end. Pinch the retainer to slide the element out. Use pliers if needed. Ensure the metal insert goes through the blade assembly's tabs when installing a new element.

From 1974 to 1977, first remove the left-hand control panel far enough to remove the attaching screws. Then, pull out the knob, disconnect the wiring and remove the switch. From 1978 to 1980, disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the instrument cluster trim panel. Finally, remove the 2 mounting screws and remove the switch from the rear.

The two-speed wiper motor includes a gear train and parks only in low speed. The motor connects to wiper arms via a crank arm and transmission shafts. It also powers the windshield washers. Depending on the vehicle model, wiper arms either park parallel to the windshield, a few inches above, or against a step on the windshield's lower molding.

Inspect the windshield wiper and blade assembly regularly for damage, loose parts, and worn blades. Clean blades with mild detergent to remove road film. Check and tighten bolts, nuts, and fasteners during blade checks. Replace cracked or worn blades. Some models have press-type release levers to remove old blades. Install new blades by pressing them onto the wiper arm pin until they snap into place. The blade element is secured by a spring-loaded retainer and metal tabs. To remove, slide the blade under the element near the tabs and slide it up. To install, align the slot in the element with the tabs and snap it into place.
