    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the oil pan in 2.3L four cylinder engine on Chevrolet Beretta? Posted by Customer
    A:
The following procedure is based on the assumption the engine is in place in the vehicle. If its been removed, simply unbolt the oil pan and detach it from the block. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery, then drain the oil. Remove the lower splash shield. Detach the lower bellhousing cover. Unbolt the exhaust manifold brace. Remove the radiator outlet pipe-to-oil pan bolt. On manual transaxle equipped models, remove the transaxle-to-oil pan nut and stud with a 7 mm socket. Gently pry the spacer out from between the oil pan and transaxle. Remove the oil pan-to-transaxle bolt. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts. Carefully separate the pan from the block. Don't pry between the block and pan or damage to the sealing surfaces may result and oil leaks may develop. The Crankshaft may have to be rotated to gain clearance for oil pan removal. If you need to get at the crankshaft or other lower end components, remove the oil pan baffle. Clean the sealing surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Make sure the bolt holes in the block are clean. The gasket should be checked carefully and replaced with a new one if damage is noted. Minor imperfections can be repaired with ATV sealant. Use only enough sealant to restore the gasket to its original size and shape. Excess sealant may cause part misalignment and oil leaks. Reinstall the oil pan baffle, if removed. With the gasket in position, carefully hold the pan against the block and install the bolts finger tight. Tighten the bolts. Start at the center of the pan and work out toward the ends in a spiral pattern. Note that the bolts are not all tightened to the same torque figure. The remaining steps are the reverse of removal. Don't forget to refill the engine with oil before starting it. Start the engine and check carefully for oil leaks at the oil pan.

    Q:
How to properly remove and install an oil pan in V6 engine on Oldsmobile Cutlass? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the negative battery cable, then raise the car and support it firmly on jack stands. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container and remove the automatic transmission flex plate lower cover. Disconnect the exhaust crossover pipe at the manifolds, followed by removing the oil pan attaching bolts and the oil pan itself. Clean the pan thoroughly with the proper solvent, ensuring that the gasket surfaces on both the block and pan are clean, smooth, and free of old gasket material. Apply sealer to the new oil pan gasket in several places and install it on the pan, making certain that the bolt holes line up. Finally, install the oil pan and pan bolts, torque-tightening the bolts to specifications.

    Q:
How to remove and install an oil pan in V8 engine on Oldsmobile Cutlass? Posted by Customer
    A:
Having instilled the engine into a vehicle, follow the procedures of How to Start, by removing the negative BAT cable and air cleaner assembly. Then, remove the distributor cap in order to avoid damaging it when lifting the engine and then unbolt the radiator shroud from the radiator support and hook it on the cooling fan. Lift the vehicle and place it on jack stands; further, dismantle the oil dipstick and dipstick tube. Siphon the engine oil and flush the engine and then remove the exhaust crossover pipe at the exhaust manifold flanges and drop the exhaust pipes and hold them with wire on the frame. In the case that the vehicle has automatic transmission, then the first parts to be taken off include the converter underpan, starter and the flywheel cover. Turn the engine counterclockwise with a bolt at the middle of the torsional damper so that the favourite timing mark points to the number 1 cylinder which means that the engine is now at top dead centre, although this will give some clearance at the front of the oil pan. Loosen and take out the through bolt of every engine mount followed by lifting the engine with the aid of an engine hoist or cherry picker to enable you to slide the oil pan away from the cross-member. Another procedure rely on the use of a floor jack with a piece of wood placed underneath the oil pan to avoid any scratching. Lift the engine further until wood blocks can be wedged in between the frame front crossmember and the engine block; reference should be made to clearance round the engine, especially with distributor and cooling fan. Place the engine on the wooden blocks such that it is well balanced and then remove the oil pan bolts, and if necessary the heads as well, considering the sizes and positions. Lower the rear of the oil pan down and wiggle the front free of the crossmember; use a rubber mallet if you need to apply serious amounts of force. Before installation the gasket sealing surfaces must be free from sealer and gasket materials, clean them properly. Place the new side gaskets to the engine block, be sure that the bolt holes align then spread a thin layer of sealer on the gaskets. Set the front and rear seals into the sealer and jam the ends of these to the side gaskets ends. Place the pan in the required position and fit all bolts loosely up to the position when they can be tightened using fingers, and then tighten the end bolts. Lower the engine onto its mounts and install the through bolts tightening them to the standard torque. Work in reverse, adding the proper grade and amount of oil, turn on the engine, and you are required to check if there is any leakage. If the engine has been pulled out from the vehicle, then most of the steps pertaining to above will not come into the picture and the pan will simply bolted and can be lifted off from the engine block in the process discussed earlier, while the installation process will involve cleaning and sealing steps described above.

    Q:
How to disconnect the battery and replace the oil pan in 3.8L V6 engine on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, ensuring that the Theftlock audio system's lockout feature is off before disconnecting the battery. Raise the vehicle securely on jackstands, drain the engine oil, and replace the oil filter if necessary. For 1995 and later models, remove the front exhaust pipe. Remove the driveplate inspection cover and starter if needed, and for 1992 and later models, disconnect the electrical connector from the oil level sensor and remove the sensor to avoid damage. Support the engine from above with an engine support fixture for 1995 and later models, then remove the front and rear engine mounts and the torque strut arms by taking out the through bolts and the bolts attaching the struts to the mounts on the radiator support. Use a floor jack under the transaxle to raise the engine, and when reinstalling the torque strut mounts, a prybar may be necessary to align the through bolts. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts located around the perimeter of the oil pan and carefully separate the oil pan from the block without prying, as this could damage the sealing surfaces. Instead, tap the pan with a soft-face hammer to break the gasket seal. Clean the pan with solvent, removing all old sealant and gasket material from the mating surfaces, and ensure the bolt holes in the block are clear. Check the oil pan flange for distortion, particularly around the bolt holes, and if needed, flatten and restore the gasket surface using a hammer on a block of wood. Always use a new gasket when installing the oil pan, place it in position on the block, and install the bolts. After installation, tighten the bolts to the specified torque in a crisscross pattern, starting from the center and working up to the final torque in three steps. The remaining steps involve reversing the removal procedure, followed by refilling the engine with oil, running the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature, and checking for leaks.

    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the oil pan in 2.3L four cylinder (Quad-4) engine on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
The procedure below presumes the engine is in situ in the car; if the engine has been Hankered, Remove bolts and disengage the oil sump from the block. Start with the removal of the negative battery terminal and then draining the oil and if the Theftlock audio system lockout is relevant it must be switched off. Disconnect the lower bellhousing cover, and take out the lower splash shield. For all models with manual transaxle, first remove exhaust manifold brace, second remove the radiator outlet pipe bolt to the oil pan. Subsequent to that, for manual transaxle equipped models, use the 7 mm socket to unscrew the transaxle-to-oil pan nut and stud, then carefully push the spacer out above the oil pan and transaxle, followed by unscrewing the oil pan-to-transaxle bolt, in addition to the oil pan mounting bolts. In a gradual manner it is recommended to pull pan from the block with out prying on the block and pan seal or gasket area but attention should be made to the crankshaft which may have to be turned for clearance. If it is necessary to remove the crankshaft or to work with other parts of lower ends P-Plate and oil pan baffle need to be removed They are fasten on four bolts. For installation clean seizure areas, with lacquer thinner or acetone, the bolt holes in the block should be free from debris. Closely examine the condition of the gasket, and replace it if it has been damaged using silicone sealant as noted above for minor surface irregularities which may be present but avoid overuse of the sealant because it will cause the alignment to be off and the later may cause oil leakages. If the oil pan baffle was removed, reinstall it, put the gasket in place, put the pan in contact with the block, and tighten the bolts enough that you can use your fingers. As far as it concerns the bolts, these have to be tightened in three steps to the torque indicated, starting from the middle of the pan and moving clockwise in circles, and it must be said that the bolts have different torque values. Last but not least complete the remaining step beginning from step 7 again and refill the engine with oil before starting the engine and in the final; scan the oil pan for oil leaks only after the engine has begun to run.
