These models are equipped with distributorless ignition systems. The spark plug wires are connected directly to the ignition coils. On many V6 engines (except 3.4L), it will be necessary to rotate the engine for access to the rear spark plugs or wires. Quad-4 engines are not equipped with spark plug wires. On 3.4L engines, the upper intake manifold must be removed first to allow access to the right side (rear) spark plugs or plug wires. On 1996 and later 3800 engines, the acoustic engine cover must be removed first to access the right side (rear) spark plugs or plug wires. The spark plug wires should be checked at the recommended intervals and whenever new spark plugs are installed in the engine. The wires should be inspected one at a time to prevent mixing up the order, which is essential for proper engine operation. Disconnect the plug wire from the spark plug. To do this, grab the rubber boot, twist slightly, and pull the wire off. Do not pull on the wire itself, only on the rubber boot. Check inside the boot for corrosion, which will look like a white crusty powder. Push the wire and boot back onto the end of the spark plug. It should be a tight fit on the plug. If it isn't, remove the wire and use pliers to carefully crimp the metal connector inside the boot until it fits securely on the end of the spark plug. Using a clean rag, wipe the entire length of the wire to remove any built-up dirt and grease. Once the wire is clean, check for burns, cracks, and other damage. Do not bend the wire excessively or pull the wire lengthwise-the conductor inside might break. Disconnect the wire from the coil. Again, pull only on the rubber boot. Check for corrosion and a tight fit in the same manner as the spark plug end. Replace the wire at the coil. Check the remaining spark plug wires one at a time, making sure they are securely fastened at the ignition coil and the spark plug when the check is complete. If new spark plug wires are required, purchase a set for your specific engine model. Wire sets are available pre-cut, with the rubber boots already installed. Remove and replace the wires one at a time to avoid mix-ups in the firing order.
