- Q:How can the flywheel be unbolted from the crankshaft rear flange after removing the transmission in V8 engine on 1986 Chevrolet Caprice?Posted by Nayadeth V.A:The flywheel can be unbolted from the crankshaft rear flange after removing the transmission, In the case of manual transmission the flywheel has to be unbolten with the clutch housing and clutch. While loosening the bolts, the crankshaft cannot turn; to avoid this put a piece of wood between one of the crankshaft throws and the side of the engine block, or use an alignment tool passed through the flywheel and the block. Before fixing the flywheel in place, ensure that the surfaces to be mated are clean; this will involve cleaning the face of the flywheel and that of the crankshaft. For manual transaxles, position the crankshaft dowel hole to the flywheel dowel hole whenever you are assembling the two components. When installing automatic transmissions position the flywheel so that the pads on which the torque converter bolts attach are on the transmission end of the flywheel. Tighten the bolts to the standard tightening pattern and ensure that the torque specification has been met, additionally use thread locking on the part threads of the bolts.
