1994 Pontiac Grand Prix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the front crankshaft seal in 2.5L four cylinder engine on 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix?
A: Remove the crankshaft pulley. Try to pry the old oil seal out with a seal removal tool or a screwdriver; be very careful as you don't want to scratch the crankshaft; this applies where the use of vinyl tape is useful to insulate the chucked screwdriver blade end. When installing the new seal spread ATV-type sealant on only the outer circumference of the seal and coat the seal lip with moly based grease or fresh engine oil. Centre the seal properly in its place in the bore then use a special tool to install it. If the special tool is not available, then the seal can be gently knocked into place using a large socket or piece of pipe and a hammer; the outer diameter of the socket or pipe should match the outer diameter of the seal and the seal should also be fully seated in the bore. The crankshaft pulley should then be fitted back then the rest of the parts replaced in a reverse manner to which they were removed. After starting the engine check for the oil leakage at the seal area.
