Shift the vehicle into Park, set the parking brake, and block the wheels to prevent rolling. Ensure the ignition is off and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the center console and trim plate. Disconnect the shift lever electrical connector, detach the harness from the clip, and position it out of the way, along with detaching the park/lock cable and removing the shift lever retaining nuts. Using a small, flat-bladed screwdriver, release the tab attaching the park/lock cable to the shift lever assembly slot, then slide the park/lock cable housing from the shift lever assembly and detach the park/lock cable end. Remove the shift lever assembly retaining nuts, taking care as the shift lever assembly and cable have limited movement due to the inflexible shift control cable rod end guide tubes; moving the shift lever to the first gear position can provide additional access. Carefully lift the shift lever assembly and use a long screwdriver to disconnect the
Shift Cable from the lever, then remove the shift lever assembly from the vehicle, ensuring it remains in the first gear position for installation. To remove the shift boot, first remove the
Shift Knob and release the clips attaching the shift boot to the shift lever assembly, then disconnect the shift indicator, remove the indicator bulb, and take out the shift boot. At this time, the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid can be replaced if necessary. Installation is the reverse of removal, and the shift cable should be adjusted anytime it has been disconnected.
