GMC Terrain Steering Column Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How do I remove the steering column?
A: To remove the steering column, start by parking the vehicle with the wheels pointing straight ahead and disconnecting the battery. Then, remove the Steering Wheel and steering column covers. Disconnect the airbag clock spring electrical connectors and the airbag electrical connectors from the instrument panel harness. Remove the bolts from the lock cylinder housing and slide the multi-function switch bracket from the column. Remove the driver's knee bolster trim panel and lower insulator panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the power steering unit, if equipped. Remove the through-bolt from the lower part of the steering column. Mark the relationship of the steering shaft U-joint to the intermediate shaft and remove the pinch bolt. Remove the steering column upper mounting fasteners, lower the column, and separate the intermediate shaft from the steering shaft to remove the column. To install the steering column, guide it into position and connect the intermediate shaft. Install the mounting bolts and tighten the pinch bolt to the specified torque. Slide the multi-function switch housing back onto the column and ensure the lock tab is fully seated. Install the ignition switch assembly and tighten the bolts. Tighten the upper and lower column mounting bolts to the specified torque. Move the column up and down and set it at the top position. Finally, tighten the remaining column mounting bolt and complete the installation by reversing the removal steps.
