Remove the battery cable from the car's negative terminal and take at least three days to let the engine cool before draining the coolant. Take out the drivebelt and the drivebelt idler, then remove the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold as well, after which you'll have to disconnect the coolant hose on the cylinder head. Take out the timing chain and the plate attached to it and detach electrical connections from the head of the cylinder that may hinder the process of removal; use adhesive tape to note connections for reconnection. Take out the cylinder head bolts and throw them away, and rattle the bolts with a prescribed sequence. It is advisable to loosen the gasket seal at the corners of the head-to-block mating surface with a pry bar, and lift the cylinder head off the engine with the aid of a wood block and hammer in as many places as you feel some point of resistance. Place the cylinder head with the gasket surfaces on wooden blocks to avoid damaging the sealing surfaces and then remove the old cylinder head gasket and remember the correct way it should be fitted. Make sure the surfaces of the cylinder head and the block to be joined by a gasket are free of carbon and of any kind of residue of the old gasket; use a gasket scraper and the brake system cleaner for that. During repair and reassembly, use shop rags to cover the open areas of the engine to avoid having debris inside the cylinders; use vacuum cleaner to clean the cylinders of any debris which may have fallen into it. The flatness of the mating surfaces of the engine block and cylinder head should also be checked for nicks and deep scratches and in chasing the threaded holes of the cylinder head bolts, a correct size tap should be used. Ensure that this new gasket lies in the dowels of the block which should then be followed by placing the cylinder head on the engine block while avoiding to dislodge the gasket. Place fresh cylinder head bolts and tighten using proper torque indicated and sequence that is prescribed; paint an arrow on each of the main cylinder head bolts that may be further tightened by an additional 155 degrees. Replace the timing chain, exhaust manifold, and intake manifold; the remaining procedures are the reversal of the above actions taken. Crank the battery connection loose and tighten again, replace the engine oil and filter, fill up the cooling system, turn the engine on and search for any of leaks of oil and coolant.
